Today at 5 PM in Jerusalem: Meet Joint List’s MK Aida Touma-Sliman

This afternoon, Sunday, at 5 PM (17:00), come to Jerusalem and have some hot soup or a cold beer and hear directly from Hadash MK Aida Touma-Sliman about the Joint List, its mission, and how you can play an active role in creating a more democratic, equal and peaceful future in Israel. The conversation will be held in English at “Hamarakyah”, Koresh 4, near the Communist Party of Israel (CPI) branch in Jerusalem.

The Joint List is an electoral alliance of Hadash and three Arab parties. Hadash’s chair, MK Aymen Odeh, leads it. The purpose of the Joint List is to represent the interests of the Arab-Palestinian national minority in Israel, work towards Jewish-Arab cooperation, a democratic future, and a just peace that will end the Occupation of the Palestinian and Arab territories.

MK Aida Touma-Sliman, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPI, is currently the fifth candidate on the Joint List slate and was second in Hadash in the 21st Knesset. Touma-Sliman is a prominent feminist activist and founder of the feminist group Women against Violence and former editor of the Al-Ittihad daily Communist newspaper. She also was the first female member of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel and founder of the International Women’s Commission for a Just Palestinian-Israeli Peace.

During the last Knesset, Touma-Sliman has been active in the struggle for gender equality and has advanced legislation for various laws to advance and protect women’s rights. Since June 2015, she is the elected head of the Knesset’s Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality. Touma-Sliman was born in Nazareth, holds a B.A. in Psychology and Arabic literature from the University of Haifa, and lives in Acre.
