The world renowned American linguist, political activist and writer Professor Noam Chomsky sent a letter to the emergency conference organized by the Communist Party of Israel (CPI) and Hadash which was held last Sunday, July 29, in Haifa against the racist “Nation-State Law.” More than 300 persons attended the conference held under the banner “Resist!” Among them were the Chairman of the Joint List, MK Ayman Odeh (Hadash), MK Aida Touma-Sliman (Hadash) and MK Mossi Raz (Meretz).
In his letter to the organizers and participants of the conference, Chomsky wrote:
“Years ago, the Israeli High Court determined that Israel is ‘the sovereign State of the Jewish people.’ By an array of legislative and bureaucratic measures, over 90% of the land of Israel was effectively restricted to Jews. Arabs were prevented from establishing settlements, while 700 were constructed for Jews alone.”
“The new law raises these principles to a Basic Law, also demoting the Arab language. There is no longer even a pretense that Israel is a state that provides equal rights to citizens. The situation in the occupied territories is far worse, particularly in Gaza, which may become literally uninhabitable by 2020, UN analysts predict.”
“Meanwhile Washington provides lavish support to the oppressors. These crimes should not be tolerable to people of good conscience worldwide, and should be brought to an end. I am very pleased to learn about the conference called to condemn the establishment of the racist ‘Nation State’ doctrine as a Basic Law, and hope it contributes to a popular movement to have this scandal reversed.”
