A Common Appeal from Cyprus for an End the War in Gaza

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL (Progressive Party of Working People, Cyprus), Stefanos Stefanou, met Friday, May 17, with MK Aida Touma-Sliman (Hadash), member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Israel, with whom the situation in Gaza and in Israel in general was discussed. In statements made after the meeting, both Stefanou and Touma-Sliman called for an end to the war and the implementation of the resolutions of the UN on the Palestinian issue.

In his statements, the General Secretary of AKEL, among other things, stressed the following: “For AKEL things are quite clear: Israel’s criminal attack against the Palestinians must end. There must be a ceasefire and a political solution to the problem must be found. And there is no way out other than the implementation of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations on the Palestinian issue, which is the creation of a Palestinian State on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is the position of the international community. This is the position that the international community must constantly put before Israel. The international community, the UN and the EU must work towards the achievement of a ceasefire and the implementation of the existing decisions that exist on the Palestinian problem.”

“We will continue as AKEL to stand on the side of the Palestinian people in their struggle for survival. We will continue to oppose the State of Israel’s actions and the criminal Netanyahu in the criminal policy of genocide that is being committed against the Palestinians,” said.

On her part, Touma-Sliman, after thanking AKEL, characterized the meeting she had with the General Secretary of AKEL as very important “in these difficult days and months that we are going through in Israel and Palestine, in a horrific war, a genocidal war that has been waged for the last seven months.” The MK of Hadash expressed particular appreciation for AKEL’s long-standing position, which supports peace and an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine, with the creation of a Palestinian state, which she said is a historic position that we have always valued highly.

In conclusion, Touma-Sliman said she conveyed “the voices of peace-loving and anti-occupation activists from our homeland, Israel. We created a partnership for peace that includes 44 organizations. Israelis – both Jews and Arabs – Palestinians who are struggling to put an end to this war and its consequences. We hope that we will continue to fight together for the best interests of all the peoples of the region and especially for the liberation of the Palestinians and the salvation of the people of Gaza from this war.”
