Hundreds of Hadash and Communist Party Activists Participated in Sheikh Jarrah Protest

Hundreds of Hadash and Communist Party activists participated on Friday in the weekly protest in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem. Israeli police arrested three demonstrators. The protesters carried Palestinian flag and chanted slogans in Arabic and Hebrew calling for an end to Israeli occupation and attacks on Palestinians in the neighborhood.

“Today, we came out as Communist Party and Hadash members to affirm the Palestinians right to self-determination and to stop forced displacement in Sheikh Jarrah, in particular, and the occupied East Jerusalem, in general,” Joint List MK Aida Touma-Sliman said.

Tensions heightened across the Palestinian territories on February 13, when Israeli forces and illegal settlers renewed their attacks against Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah. The neighborhood has been the scene of frequent crackdowns by Israeli regime forces on the Palestinians protesting against the threatened expulsion of dozens of families from their homes in favor of Israeli settler groups.

On past week, after years of protests and demonstrations, Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that a group of Palestinian families slated for eviction from neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah can remain in their homes for the time being. The court ruled on Tuesday that the four families could stay in their homes until Israel carried out a land arrangement, a process that could take years or may not be carried out at all.
