Knesset honors Red Army veterans

Every year on Victory Day, which falls on Thursday 9th May this year, they parade in uniform throughout Israel to celebrate Nazi Germany’s surrender to the Soviet Union. Victory Day, celebrated on May 9 to mark the defeat of Nazi forces at the hands of the Red Army, well be celebrated by communists activists tomorrow, on Saturday, in the Red Army Forest near Jerusalem

Ahead of Victory Day, marked May 9, the Knesset honored Red Army veterans Tuesday. MK Dov Khenin said on the special Israeli parliament session: “The Knesset marked on Tuesday the victory Day over the Nazis. Our guests were veterans of the war, Red Army soldiers, the partisans and the Allied armies, the heroes of the battle against the evil. My friend, MK Muhammad Barakeh, told in a moving speech about his visit to Auschwitz as a member of the Knesset. Muhammad finished his remarks by reading a poem by the German priest Martin Niemöller:

USSR flag over Berlin

‘When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

‘When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

‘When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

‘When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.

‘When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.”
