General Strike to Protest Police Brutality Called for Tuesday in Arab Community in Israel

The High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel, the organization representing Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, has called for a general strike in the Arab community for Tuesday, October 13, to protest the events of recent days and the ongoing brutality by Israel’s police force. The strike will include schools and the commercial sector. A general strike will also take place on the same day in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank.

On Wednesday, October 14, all the Arab MKs from the Joint List plan to visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem together with the members of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens. The planned visit is in contravention to the guidelines issued last week by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructing Jewish and Arab MKs not to visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque – Temple Mount. The MKs are also planning to attend a large demonstration in the Galilee city of Sakhnin set for Tuesday.

Thousands demonstrated in Nazareth on Saturday afternoon, October 10, while Palestinian protests continued throughout the West Bank, around Jerusalem, and along the border of the Gaza Strip. In Nazareth, Arabs and Jews took part in a demonstration organized by the Jewish-Arab Hadash front and the Communist Party of Israel (CPI). The protest was called to express dissatisfaction with the government’s occupation policy and to call for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. “Netanyahu, resign – peace is worth more!” and “Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies!” chanted the demonstrators. A day earlier, Friday, hundreds of Hadash and CPI activists held a protest in central Tel Aviv, calling to renew peace talks with the Palestinian Authority and to put an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Among the demonstrators were members of Meretz, Gush Shalom, Ma’avak Sotzialisti, Women in Black and Breaking the Silence.  Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “The only answer to the Right: Israel and Palestine.”
