Hadash: Israel has an obligation to remember the Armenian genocide

“Hitler decided to take up the Holocaust as he was sure no one would remember about it, as was in the case of the Armenians”, MK Dov Khenin (Hadash – Democratic Front for Peace and Equality – Communist Party of Israel) said.

The Knesset holds yesterday hearings on the 1915 Armenian Genocide. MK Khenin claims that numbers and security issues may be arguable, however, death of hundreds of thousands of Armenians forced to deportation to Syrian deserts is a fact. Earlier he said journalists that Israel has an obligation to remember the murder of more than a million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire more than a hundred years ago.

The Armenian genocide was the murder of between 1 million and 1.5 million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire during and following World War I. Although the Turkish government denies that a genocide was committed, many international bodies recognize that it did in fact occur.
