Jews and Arabs Marched from Jaffa to Tel Aviv to Mark May Day

Several hundred people, Jews and Arabs marched from Jaffa to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, May 1, to mark International Workers Day – May Day. Other rally was held from Abu Snan to the May Day Square at Kufr Yassif in the Western Galilee.

In Tel-Aviv, marchers carried red flags and banners from Hadash, the Communist Party of Israel (CPI), the Young Communist League of Israel Among participants activists from Histadrut labor union, Koach LaOvdim (Power to the Workers) union movement, Meretz, Hapoel (sports league) fans and other smaller groups. The demonstrators marched from Gesher Teather in Jaffa to Allenby Street in Tel-Aviv shouting slogans against the war in Gaza, the occupation of the Palestinian territories, “Shilton HaHon,” (“the regime of capital”) and against the far-right chauvinist Israeli government. Young Communist League orchestras filled the air with the sound of drums.

Among those who participated in the Tel-Aviv march were Hadash Chairman Issam Makhoul, a former MK and current head of the Emile Touma Center, Hadash MK Ofer Cassif and former Hadash MKs Tamar Gozansky and Dov Khenin.

MK Cassif told the crowd, “We march today to protest against the criminal massacre in Gaza, the occupation and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, against social injustice, class exploitation and fascism, and for the release of the hostages on the basis of ‘all-for-all’ principle, for social and national equality, democracy, and just peace.”

On last Saturday, April 27, thousands marched in Nazareth for the CPI and Hadash May Day parade, this after the police confiscated last Friday equipment and flags from the Hadash and CPI branch in the city ahead of the march. At Paulus Street in Nazareth, between the red flags and flags of Palestine, banners were carried against the deadly war in Gaza, occupation of the Palestinian territories, US imperialism, capitalism and in favor of the dignity of the working class.
