Greek Communist MEP Demands Ahed Tamimi’s Immediate Release

A Member of the European Parliament (MEP) delegation from Greece who belongs to his county’s Communist Party (KKE) has denounced the provocative prosecution of the 16 year old Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi by Israeli authorities and has demanded the latter’s immediate release.

The communist MEP Kostas Papadakis made his allegations and demand in a formal question submitted in writing to the European Parliament’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini. In his question Papadakis indicates that Israel has recently escalated its aggression by provocatively arresting Tamimi and filing 12 charges against her in an Israeli military court because of her scuffling with Israel soldiers in the West Bank after they invaded her home. The Greek communist also noted that the incident which led to the young Palestinian’s arrest occurred a few days after Israeli occupation forces shot Tamimi’s 15 year old cousin in the face, critically wounding him.

“At the same time”, wrote the KKE MEP, “the raids of Israeli fighter aircraft on the Gaza Strip, the expansion of the settlements and the wounding and murder or Palestinians all continue in the aftermath of the unacceptable decision by the US to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and transfer the US embassy there.”

Papadakis continued: “Both the EU and the Greek SYRIZA-ANEL government are accomplices to the ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people, as long as they not only maintain but also upgrade their relations with the State of Israel with agreements like the one signed for the Eastmed Pipeline, in the name of ‘stability in the region’ and for the interests of the monopolies they serve.”

The KKE MEP concluded his letter asking the EU’s High Representative “[w]hether or not she denounces the arrest of the 16 year old Palestinian girl and the escalation of Israel’s aggression,” and what actions Mogherini intends to undertake to secure Tamimi’s “immediate release?”
