MK Khenin: A dismal day for Israeli democracy

This Monday MK Dov Khenin (Hadash) castigated the Legislation Committee’s approval of the proposal to double the Knesset party entrance threshold to votes of 4% of the population, and require 61 MKs for a no-confidence motion. “The people are losing their trust in the political system. Democracy should allow small parties to enter the Knesset and also provide even a Knesset minority with the option of replacing the government with a no-confidence motion,” explained Khenin.

The Ministerial Legislation Committee approved the draft version of the “governance bill” submitted by Knesset Member David Rotem of the extremist right wing party Yisrael Beiteinu. The full title of the proposal, slated for an expedited legislative procedure, is “Increase of Governance and Raising of the Electoral Threshold.” The bill was also criticized on the center-left of the political spectrum, including by Opposition Chairwoman MK Shelly Yachimovich (Labor party), and Meretz Chairwoman, Zehava Galon both of whose comparatively large and right wing parties stand to benefit from the bill.
