Dozens in Umm al-Fahm Protest against the Murder of Women

Dozens protested on Friday at the entrance the city of Um El Fahm, against women homicide in the Arab-Palestinian national minority in Israel , following the murder of Muna Mahjana, aged 29, who was shot to death on Sunday in the city. On Thursday, Mahjana’s brother, who was suspected in the murder, was released. Further suspects are yet to be arrested.

The demonstrators hoisted signs reading: “No more women murders” and “the criminals must be punished.” Among the demonstrators: MK Afu Agabaryie and leading feminist activist Aida Touma-Sliman, the editor in chief of the daily communist newspaper “Al Ittihad”. “A society which respects itself does not accept this crime, and does not stay silent,” Touma-Sliman said.  “This is part of the struggle we want to have on the shape of society. We believe in gender equality and social justice,” she added. According to Touma-Sliman dozens of women homicide cases “were closed despite the existence of evidence, and the reason was never explained.”
