Hundreds protest against racism in Tel Aviv

Hundreds took part in a Tel Aviv demonstration against racism directed to the Ethiopian community on Wednesday. At the end of the protest, about half of the demonstrators marched in the streets of Tel Aviv.  The demonstrators blocked a major intersection, while chanting slogans such as “The people demand social equality”, and “We will not allow blacks to be miserable.”

Many of the participants were members of the Ethiopian community, including Mulet Hararo, the student who marched from Kiryat Malakhi to Jerusalem to protest racism. Social protest leaders, among them Hadash activists, also attended the protest.

“This protest is just beginning and next time we will be disrupting the Israeli society in places like the Azrieli junction and the Rabin Square,” Hararo said.  The protest comes a week after 5,000 people demonstrated against racism in Jerusalem. During that protest, protesters blocked a major road in the capital and marched in front of the Knesset, holding signs that read, “Blacks and Whites – We’re all Equal,” “Social Justice” and “Our Blood is Only Good for Wars.”
