Hundreds protested in a Jerusalem rally against exclusion of women

Hundreds of people participated Friday in a Jerusalem rally protested orthodox Jewish religious (haredi) elements’ demand to shun women form public life in Israel This is the fourth event to take place in Jerusalem following a number of incidents in which women were shunned from the public eye, including the removal of women figures from ad campaigns and separation of sexes during the Simchat Torah celebrations in Mea Shearim.

Tanya Rosenblit, a woman who refused to sit in the back of a bus travelling from Ashdod to Jerusalem despite the demands of haredi male passengers, rallied the protest against the exclusion of women from the public sphere. “I am at peace with my actions. There are basic rights that no individual or body can take from us. The public domain should be free, and people should be allowed to act as they see fit – work out, dress, eat and travel – to move about wherever they wish,” Rosenblit said following the rally.
