Amid Massacre in Rafah: Protestors Call to End the War in Mayor Cities and Universities

Amid massacre in Gaza, protestors call on Monday evening and Tuesday, May 28, to end the war at Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Umm al-Fahm, Kafr Kassem and universities all over Israel. An Israeli airstrike on Sunday night ignited a massive blaze, killing 45 people in a tent camp in Palestinian city of Rafah. The incident prompted an outcry from global leaders, who called for the implementation of a World Court ruling to halt Israel’s assault.

Hundreds marched at Ibn Gabirol Street in Tel-Aviv on Monday night, among them Hadash and Communist Party of Israel activists, chanting “Stop bombing Rafah,” “End the war” and “End occupation,” and called for an immediate Gaza ceasefire. During the meeting at near Habima Square, a fascist infiltrated the crowd and assaulted the protesters, leading to a physical scuffle.

In central West Jerusalem more than 200 protesters shouted out against the horrific burning of Palestinian refugees in their tents, which joins to the many war crimes before and after the start of this massacre. “In our grief and rage we call for an end to this war and the return of the hostages,” one protestor said.

Nine demonstrators were arrested on Monday night during a protest against the killing of civilians in Rafah held in Haifa. The police have dispersed the demonstration of around 300 people in Haifa who were calling to end the war in the Gaza Strip. Mounted police officers were involved in shutting down the protest, and officers also confiscated a Palestinian flag which was waving, and signs that read “Stop the massacre” and “This is what a genocide is.”

On Tuesday, Hadash students called for a strike in universities in Israel “in response to the massacres committed against the Palestinian people in Gaza” and for a broad student strike for one hour between 12 and 1 p.m.  “This strike is a response to the massacres and the stubbornness of the political leadership in Israel regarding the continuation of the war. Our position is based on our moral, ethical and humanitarian stand as students’ movement, fulfilling our duty to raise the voices against the massacres that are being committed in front of the whole international community,” they said. Academia for Equality, an Israeli left-wing organization with a membership of more than 800 university and college lecturers and professors, join the strike.

At the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, hundreds of Arab and Jewish students protested in Mount Scopus campus against Israel’s deadly military operation in Rafah, waving Palestinian flags and chanting anti-occupation slogans. The invitation to that demonstration called for students to rally against the “extermination and massacre in Gaza.” The demonstration was banned at Tel-Aviv University and other protests were held at Haifa University, Ben-Gurion University and Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa.
