Renewed social protest On Saturday night, 29.10

The main renewed social protest will open with a march from Tel Aviv’s Rothschild Boulevard at 20:00 to Rabin Square in the city center, where speeches will be delivered by a number of people, including Daphni Leef, alongside a slew of performances by several artists.

Demonstrations are also set to take place the same evening in Kiryat Shmona, Rosh Pina, Haifa, Rishon Letzion, Modi’in, Jerusalem, Be’er Sheva, and Eilat.

Israel social justice protest leaders held a press conference (25.10) in the run-up to the mass demonstration scheduled for Saturday night, two months after 450,000 poured into the streets across the country to rally against the high costs of living and for a social budget for 2012.

Protest leader Daphni Leef, who initiated the Tel Aviv tent city that launched a nation-wide protest movement, urged the public to once again flood Israel’s streets to show their discontent with the government.

Leef accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “using the nation as a springboard” and “living on our expense”.

“The time has come for you to admit your mistakes and understand that your time is running out”, Leef said, in remarks directed at Netanyahu.

The protest leader said it was difficult to predict how many people would join the demonstration on Saturday, but said they remain largely optimistic.

“After the holidays, people feel the holes in their pockets,” said one strategic adviser to the protest leaders. “The situation is not going to get better in the coming months. Nothing has happened to improve the lot of the people.”
