Hundreds rallied in solidarity with a teacher in Kiryat Tivon

Hundreds of pupils and residents of Kyriat Tivon and its surroundings protested on Saturday night in Tivon against the suspension of Adam Verta, a civics teacher at Kiryat Tivon’s Ort Greenberg High School.

Earlier this week it was claimed that Verta expressed “extreme leftist views” in his classes. The demonstrators carried signs in favor of the freedom of expression and covered their mouths with stickers that read “teachers will not be silenced.” Hadash MK Dov Khenin said that as far as he is concerned the discussion is not only about a teacher and a pupil, but about questions pertaining to the education system in general, such as “what is the status of the teacher in the classroom, in the school? Can one educate without discussing politics?” He called to reinstate the school teacher. “School is a part of democracy, and moral dilemmas should be discussed in school,” he said.
