A Palestinian from the Gaza Strip succumbed to his wounds on Saturday, May 26, sustained from Israeli army gunfire during the March of Return protests last week at the Gaza border with Israel, according to WAFA Palestinian News Agency correspondent. The journalist said that Hussein Salem Abu Aweida, 41, who was shot and critically injured while selling ice cream and other cold refreshments from a kiosk, died of his wounds at al-Shifa Hospital where he was receiving treatment. Abu Aweida’s death made him the 116th fatality killed by Israeli forces since the “Great March of Return” began in Gaza on March 30. Among these victims, 14 have been children.
Two days earlier, Thursday, May 23, two other Palestinians from Gaza died from the wounds they sustained during protests earlier in the week in along the Israeli-imposed border fence. The Ministry of Health in Gaza said that Ahmed Ali Qatush, 23, who was shot during protests east of the al-Bureij refugee camp in northern Gaza died at al-Shifa hospital. The second Palestinian was identified as Muhannad Baker Abu Tahoun, 21, who succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head. Abu Tahoun had been transferred from Gaza to the southern occupied West Bank city of Hebron, where he was to receive treatment at the al-Ahli hospital. He died within 24 hours of having arrived at the hospital.
The ministry said that, up to the time of their announcement, approximately 50 Palestinians being treated in Gaza hospitals were in still in very critical condition, many of them mortally so.
The Protests and Carnage in Gaza Continue
On Friday, May 25, at least 109 Palestinians, including four children and nine women, were wounded by gunfire and others were overcome by teargas when Israeli soldiers attacked them as they participated in the continuing Great March of Return protests along the Gaza-Israel border, medical sources said. Among the wounded, three were critically injured by gunshots to the head, while the other 106 sustained injuries to various parts of their bodies. The protesters burned old tires near the border to make it more difficult for the Israeli soldiers to target them. The soldiers fired live ammunition even though their lives were in no way threatened by the protestors.
Next Friday: “Human Solidarity Chain” in Haifa
Hadash and the Communist Party of Israel (CPI) are organizing a “Human Solidarity Chain – From Haifa to Gaza” in Haifa’s German Colony, next Friday, June 1, at UNESCO Square, starting from 5 pm. It was here that on Sunday night, May 20, Hadash and the CPi held a demonstration against the carnage in Gaza.
