Hashem Mahameed, Former MK from Hadash and Mayor of Umm al-Fahm, Dies at the Age of 73

Former Hadash Knesset member and Mayor of Umm al-Fahm, Hashem Mahameed, died on Tuesday, April 3, at the age of 73. Mahameed was a member of the Knesset between 1990 and 2003. He later served as a leading member of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel.

Born in Umm al-Fahm in 1945, Mahameed studied education at the Hadassim Teachers’ Seminary where he earned a B.A. and went on to receive an M.A. from Tel Aviv University. He later became mayor of Umm al-Fahm and subsequently a national politician when he entered the Knesset on the Hadash list on January 10, 1990.
