Facebook group calls for boycott of high-priced foods

As cost of dairy product nears that of gas, Facebook group calls for boycott of high-priced foods and ‘No reason for us to be screwed’, organizer says.  With revolution sweeping the Arab countries, Facebook-inspired protests have come to Israel in an unlikely form, in a carton of cottage cheese.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a tub of the cheese slammed on his desk in parliament on Wednesday by opposition lawmakers who support the call to “boycott cottage,” in the face of a sharp rise in food and gas prices.

Israel’s Facebook protest against prices is growing quickly. More than 32,000 people have joined the Facebook group which is calling for a one-month boycott of cottage cheese for July. The group had 5,000 friends 24 hours ago.

The price of a container of cottage cheese has risen to almost NIS 8, (2.35 dollars or 1.65 euro) and it is just one of many food items whose prices have soared since they were taken off the list of goods controlled by the government.

The Israeli business newspaper “Globes” investigated food prices in Israel and its comparison with prices in Europe and the US found that prices in Israel were substantially higher.
