Protest in Abu Ghosh in Wake of “Price Tag” Racist Acts

Hundreds Jews and Arabs protested Tuesday evening in a site where a racist “price tag” act was perpetrated. The protesters cried out against the recent prevalence of “price tag” and other racist acts.  Residents of the Abu Ghosh Arab town, adjacent to Jerusalem, found on Tuesday morning the tires of 28 cars slashed and walls in the area spray painted with racist slurs such as “Arabs out”.

“I saw this in the West Bank, I saw this in the occupied territories, but I never dreamed the extreme right wing would get to my home in Abu Ghosh,” Khatem Ibrahim, whose tires were slashed, said Tuesday on Israel Radio. “Why? Because we teach everyone what coexistence is,” Ibrahim added. “My neighbor here is Jewish, and his tires were also slashed.”

MK Dov Khenin (Hadash) condemned the racist attack and lashed out at the government which he said, “approves racist laws and refuses to call the ‘price tag’ activists members of a terrorist organization.” MK Khenin said that by doing so, the government shares the responsibility for such hate crimes.  Peace Now director general Yariv Oppenheimer also drew a connection between recent legislation in Israel and Tuesday’s incident, saying, “The day after a law is passed that discriminates against Arabs and does not classify price tag attacks as terror, people on the ground act accordingly.”
