Communist Parties: “US Must Lift Its Blockade of Cuba Immediately!”

Under the slogan “Solidarity Yes – Blockade No,” dozens of Communist Parties around the world have signed a joint statement demanding the immediate lifting of the criminal US blockade against Cuba.

The text of the statement signed by the parties follows:

“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread over the entire planet causing enormous human pain and loss, it tragically confirms the existence of two different approaches to organizing society: one that insists on putting profits and the imposing of global control above the health of the public and the general well-being of people; and the second one that places people, their health and well-being above all other interests.

"Cuba is assisting other countries in fighting COVID-19 by sending them medical teams."

“Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, on different continents peoples are witnessing the internationalism and solidarity exhibited by Cuba as it responds to calls for assistance by dispatching medical teams to tens of countries. This humanitarian response is the continuation of decades of disinterested practice when Cuban doctors and nurses have come to the assistance of countries stricken by natural disasters or epidemics.

“While the word ‘solidarity’ is echoed from different corners as the necessary approach for the entire globe to face the pandemic, the US has chosen to further harden the illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba. At critical times like these, when human lives are at stake, by imposing the extraterritoriality clause of the Helms-Burton Law, the US is obstructing the acquiring and delivery of personal protective equipment, ventilators, and test kits to Cuba. This is the most gruesome manifestation of the criminal 60-year-long blockade and its consequences for the life and economic development of Cuba and its people.

“Under these conditions we the undersigned Communist and Workers’ Parties:

  • Denounce the criminal US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba;
  • Demand the immediate lifting of the illegal US blockade of Cuba;
  • Express our gratitude for the solidarity Cuba is extending to peoples in need by internationally deploying its medical teams;
  • Reiterate our solidarity with the Communist Party of Cuba, and the Cuban Government and People in their struggle to defend the socialist path of development.”
