Despite PM’s Promise, Dawabsheh Family Denied Compensation

According to Al Ittihad, the daily Arabic-language newspaper of the Communist Party of Israel, the Dawabsheh family from the Palestinian West Bank village of Duma, the father, mother, and toddler son of which died as a result of an arson attack perpetrated by settlers at the end of July this year, will receive no compensation from the State of Israel, contrary to promises made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In response to a parliamentary query made by Joint List MK Yousef Jabareen (Hadash), Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan said on Wednesday, December 16, that the Dawabsheh family is not entitled to receive compensation from the state because the law that stipulates this for victims of terror attacks “only applies to Israeli citizens.”

The Dawabsheh family home in the village of Duma was set ablaze by incendiary devices in a predawn attack on July 31, 2015. The youngest member of the family, 18 month old son Ali, died in the fire. His father Saed (30) and mother Reham (27) suffered extensive burns and fought for their lives in hospital but subsequently died. The only surviving member of the young family is Ahmad, now five years old, who is still in hospital after having suffered burns to 60 percent of his body.
