Police Forcibly Disperse Anti-War Demonstration in Tel Aviv; 17 Protesters Arrested

Around two thousand protesters gathered in Tel Aviv’s Habima Square, and several hundreds gathered in dozens of locations across the country, among them Jerusalem, Haifa, Beer Sheva, Kfar Saba, Tamra and Kfar Yassif, on Saturday, April 4, to protest US-Israel’s ongoing war in Iran, despite the army limiting gatherings in public areas to 150 people. The army refused to permit the protest in Tel Aviv, citing Iranian missile threats and police disregarded a High Court order to find a framework balancing “security needs and freedom of speech.”

The High Court of Justice on Saturday evening issued an interim order effectively forbidding law enforcement from forcibly dispersing protests of less than 600 attendees at Habima, and less than 150 attendees in Jerusalem, Haifa and Kfar Saba. Police say the demonstration exceeded 600 people and declared it unlawful. The commander at the scene orders protesters to vacate the plaza and police begin to violently disperse the crowd.

However, carrying anti-war banners and chanting slogans against far-right Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, protestors continued to gather in the central square, holding signs that read: “Don’t bomb — talk! End the endless war!”, and red flags despite restrictions on mass gatherings imposed during the war against Iran and brutally police repression.

Hadash MK Ofer Cassif, posts a video of himself attending the anti-war protest in Tel Aviv on X, accusing racist “National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s militia” of having “exerted severe violence against protesters, a blatant violation of freedom of expression and the right to protest.” “We shall overcome,” said.
