Police Disperse Demonstrators Against the War in Iran at Tel Aviv and Haifa

Israeli police dispersed demonstrators in Tel Aviv and Haifa, on Saturday evening, March 7, who gathered to protest and demand an end to the war with Iran, among them Hadash MK Ofer Cassif and several Hadash and Communist Party of Israel members who carried red flags and banners against occupation and imperialism. The rally in the cities reflected growing public opposition to the conflict and calls for diplomatic solutions.

During the demonstration in Haifa, Hadash MK Ayman Odeh said to journalists, “This is a protest against a war of choice; a war of political survival for the far-right government and the US interests in the Middle East at the cost of unnecessary loss of blood.”

On last Thursday, an Israeli court criticized the police’s decision to conduct a strip search on a 19-year-old arrested, the young communist Itamar Greenberg, at an anti-Iran war demonstration in the Habima Square the day before. The Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court also canceled the house arrest and restrictive conditions imposed by the police. “It is unacceptable that the fact that a person has a different opinion, however extreme, grants authorities the right to carry out unlawful actions,” the ruling said

Greenberg is a conscientious objector who has been repeatedly jailed and has served five consecutive sentences at Neve Tzedek military prison in Central Israel, for refusing to enlist in the Israeli army after being summoned for compulsory military service.  He was born into a Haredi (ultra-Orthodox Jewish) family in Bnei Brak
