MK Odeh Slams Lack of Shelters, Police Detain 3 at Tel Aviv Protest Against War in Iran and Gaza

Hadash MK Ayman Odeh slams Monday, June 16, the far-right government for not providing enough public shelters, especially for Arab municipalities, following a deadly Iranian missile strike on Saturday in the northern city of Tamra, which killed four residents. “Tamra is not a village. It is a city of 37,000 residents. A city without public shelters. The heavy price of neglect, as well as of war, is now being revealed before our eyes,” Odeh posts on X following a visit to the scene of the tragedy.

During Saturday night’s Iranian barrage, a missile struck a two-story home in Tamra, killing four women and injuring some 10 people. The victims are Manar Khatib and her two daughters, Hala, 20, and Shada, 13, as well as another relative, also named Manar Khatib. About 40 people were injured, though none of the wounds were life-threatening. “And it’s not just in Tamra: about 60% of local authorities in Israel lack public shelters completely. The threat that now looms over us all, a threat of unprecedented destruction, does not distinguish between blood and blood. But the state, unfortunately, still distinguishes between blood and blood,” he continues, stating that his “heart goes out to all the residents of this country, Jews and Arabs alike.” “No to war with Iran, enough of the war of annihilation in Gaza. Agreements save lives. Dictators think wars save them,” he asserts.

“Netanyahu is using this war for political reasons,” Odeh said.
He’s putting everyone in danger in the region with this war, and the war in Gaza. This is the most fascist and dangerous government that we ever had, and it is a danger to everyone.”

On Sunday evening, Police brutally detained three activists at a protest against the war in Gaza and Israel’s attacks on Iran, at Tel Aviv’s Habima Square. Among those arrested Hadash deputy chairperson, Att. Noa Levy and a young communist from Bnei Brak, the anti-war activist Itamar Greenberg. Officers push his face against a car and accuse him of resisting arrest, as he shouts that he is not.

Some three dozen police officers showed up as the protesters appeared set to shout slogans and declare the protest “illegal under army’s Home Front Command rules,” which forbid public gatherings due to the threat of missiles from Iran. The protesters then spread out across the square, standing in silence with signs bearing slogans against occupation of the Palestinian territories the Gaza war and Iran offensives. Officers form a row and comb across the plaza as the protesters refuse to disperse, snatching any signs they come across. At the same time, a similar protest was held at Central Carmel in Haifa, but the police didn’t intervene.
