Communist Party of Israel: Highest Imperative Is to Stop the War in Gaza Too

After nearly a year and two months, the war in the north is about to end. The agreement between Israel and Lebanon closely resembles UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the second Lebanon war. According to the agreement, the Israeli occupation forces will gradually pull back from Lebanese territory, Hezbollah will evacuate areas south of the Litani River and Lebanese Army forces will gradually enter the area.

One hundred activists gathered Wednesday in solidarity with war refusers Iddo Elam and Soul Behar Tsalic which declared their refuse to serve in the occupation army at the Tel Hashomer induction office. Among protesters: Communist Party of Israel Secretary General, Adel Amer and Hadash Secretary General, Amjad Shbita. With them Itamar Greenberg refused for the fourth time after serving 105 days in military prison. According to the front-page editorial of the Communist weekly Zo Haderech, under the title: “Highest Imperative Is to Stop the War in Gaza Too”: “The ceasefire agreement which went into effect today is good news. However, the real question that is at the root of all of Israel’s conflicts in the region, is the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Now, the war in Gaza must come to an end quickly, and an agreement must be reach in which all the hostages are released, and Israel leaves Gaza Strip permanently.”

“The Israeli occupation over the Palestinian people must come to an end and the two-states solution needs to be negotiated and implemented. Israel needs to become a state where all citizens enjoy full equality,” Zo Haderech agreed.

MK Ofer Cassif (Hadash) said, “The ceasefire in Lebanon is welcome and desirable, even though it came late and cost a lot of blood, destruction and pain. But the ceasefire must be extended to an all-inclusive end to war, in Gaza as well. Ending the war in Gaza, returning the hostages and paving the way to ending the occupation and speeding up the political process to establish a Palestinian state is the only solution and the true interest of the entire region, including the Israelis.”

MK Aida Touma-Sliman (Hadash) added, “The ceasefire brings relief to the people of Lebanon and for us in northern Israel. It should have been reached long ago. Now, all our efforts must be directed at ending the war of destruction in Gaza. Only a retreat from Gaza and work toward a diplomatic resolution would bring security for Palestinians and Israelis. No more bombs, no more killing.”
