Aon Lee Green: “It’s time to end the waiters exploitation”

The Israeli waiters being exploited by the owners of the halls, restaurants and cafes, are organizing and setting up a union to fight for waiter’s rights legislation.
The initiator of the union is  an active social entrepreneur and member of the leadership of Maki and Hadash, Alon-Iee Green, who founded in 2007, the first waiters’ committee at the cafe where he worked at the time, Kofi-Been.

Many waiters do not receive their full salary slip, and their social rights are ignored. In addition, the waiters do not get paid for being in the restaurant when on a standard exchange and often are paid lower than the minimum wage.

Most restaurants and cafes act contrary to the ruling of the National Labor Court in 2009, which determined that the tip will be considered only if wages are recorded in the books of the employer and paid taxes on it.

Alon-Iee Green explains, that the owners use many creative ways, but none of them is lawful. “We want to organize the waiters and establish a collective agreement. We want dialogue with the Association of restaurateurs and the Ministry of Commerce” .
