Regional Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties of the Middle East: Expression of Solidarity with the People of Cyprus

On 24-25 October 2014, the undersigned Communist and Workers’ Parties participated in a regional meeting held in Cyprus. The parties participating in this conference have passed resolutions which:

  • Support the sovereign right of all states to the peaceful development of their resources
  • Affirm the inalienable right of the Republic of Cyprus to explore and extract hydrocarbons in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), just like any other state

  • Note the directive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey which purports to annex regions of the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus in which the latter can exclusively conduct research and exercise its sovereign rights
  • Denounce the illegal annexation of part of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey as an unacceptable act which violates the Treaty of the United Nations for the Law of the Sea and Customary International Law
  • Emphasize that the unilateral actions of the Turkish government with regard to these areas increase tension in the region and negatively affect the inter-communal talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem
  • Call on the international community to demand the revoking of Turkey’s illegal notice and to denounce any act of harassment of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus within its EEZ
  • Express solidarity with the struggle of the Cypriot people for the liberation and reunification of their country
