Joint Statement of Communist & Workers’ Parties for May Day 2020

Dozens of communist and workers’ parties released a joint statement towards this year’s May Day – International Workers’ Day –  which was commemorated yesterday, May 1. The statement follows:

“Despite the fact that this year’s workers’ mobilizations will not be as massive as in previous years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many workers around the world will being using various forms of struggle to honor their commitment of International Workers’ Day as a day of strike, while projecting their goals and demands to oppose capitalist exploitation.

“In this year, at a time when the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is intensifying, the public health systems in the most capitalist countries are failing and are proving themselves incapable of protecting human safety.

“Millions of workers have lost their jobs; labor rights are abolished; thousands of workers, especially the elderly, are at risk of losing their lives; and health systems are proving themselves powerless in the face of this pandemic. The world economy has entered an unprecedented crisis, while neo-liberal governments assist the large, monopolistic firms by giving away trillions dollars to privately-owned companies to protect capitalism, while abandoning hundreds of millions of people who are suffering from poverty, unemployment and marginalization.

“The new global crisis is not a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We, communist and workers’ parties, maintain that this crisis is the result of the insurmountable contradictions of the exploitative capitalist system, while the emergence of COVID-19 only re-emphasizes the class character of the anti-popular policy of bourgeois governments and the capitalist market economy, which for decades has willfully neglected health services, the environment and scientific research.

“In this new situation, we fight as communist and labor parties in our respective countries against dictatorships, the extreme right, the new fascism and in general against capitalist regimes that exploit the working class and other popular strata. We are fighting against imperialist plans and interventions of the US, NATO, the EU and their allies. At the same time, we are fighting in unison for socialism, which will establish really necessary development to serve the people’s needs and the cause of true peace, while abolishing the exploitation of man-by-man. Capitalism is not the end of history, and the communist and workers’ parties seek to coordinate the international struggle to overthrow it. The struggle for peace, workers’ rights, a safe environment, public health protection, and the end of poverty and unemployment demands workers’ power, socialism, and the joint struggle of the communist and workers’ parties, of the working class and the peoples. May Day both symbolizes and motivates those of us who are fighting for socialism, the bright future of humanity.”
