Demonstration Today in Tel Aviv vs. Demolition of Khan al-Ahmar

Today, Friday, June 29, a demonstration will be held in Tel Aviv against the racist and criminal plan to demolish the Arab-Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, in order to allow Israel to expand its urban settlement of Kfar Adumim in the occupied Palestinian territories, east of Jerusalem.

Khan al-Ahmar - The demolition and transfer are imminent.

Khan al-Ahmar – The demolition and transfer are imminent.

The plan, which has been approved by the Israel’s Supreme Court, involves the demolition of the village and the expulsion of some 170 residents from their lands. The sheep pens of the villagers will be destroyed, as will the ecological school for about 200 pupils which was established under an initiative of the European Union. With the court’s ruling, the efforts to judicially prevent the injustice of demolitions and evictions have ended and the lives of the 173 residents of Khan al-Ahmar have been abandoned to the demolition teams and their bulldozers. Every day that dawns may be the villagers’ last day at Khan al-Ahmar.

The forced expulsion plan is part of the government’s strategy to create territorial contiguity of Israeli settlements between Ma’aleh Adumim and Jerusalem; to uproot ever more Palestinian communities from Area C; to prepare these lands for their annexation; to perpetuate the occupation; and to prevent any possibility of establishing an independent Palestinian state.

Today’s demonstration was initiated by Hadash and the Communist Party of Israel and among the organizations participating are the Khan al-Ahmar Coalition, Peace Now, Combatants for Peace, Gush Shalom, Meretz, Hadash Students and Ta’ayush. The protest will begin at 13:00, on the corner of Ben Zion and King George Streets in Tel Aviv.
